Dermapen FAQs

How many treatments of Dermapen are recommended for rejuvenation, acne scarring and stretch marks?

Rejuvenation:          4-6 treatments         4 weeks apart
Acne scarring:         6 treatments            6 weeks apart
Stretch marks:         4-8 treatments        4-6 weeks apart

How should I prepare my skin before having a Dermapen treatment?

For the best results prior to treatment, we recommend a period of using treatment creams such as Vitamin A, C or Resveratrol & Procyanidin to build-up the skin’s strength, especially for thin or delicate skin areas. After the treatment you will need to continue to use these creams for a period of about 6 weeks.

How long should it take before I see results of my Dermapen treatment?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment. Lasting and more significant results will occur after the full 4 to 6 treatments which are spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Your skin will continue to improve after the course of treatment, and you will see further improvement when combined with the recommended post treatment care.

Is the Dermapen treatment painful?

There are two types of Dermapen treatments. The first type uses an aesthetic cream to numb the area 15-40 minutes before treatment commences, to allow for a deeper, more aggressive Dermapen treatment. The second involves using Dermapen at a shallower depth, eliminating the need to use an aesthetic cream. The skin may appear red and irritated for a few days depending on the patient’s skin and the type of treatment provided. But using specially formulated creams before and after the treatment can minimise this effect.

Is there any downtime after Dermapen treatments?

There is usually no downtime, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately afterwards. The application of Lycogel, a breathable camouflage will seal the skin and cover any redness for an immediate return to work.

What can I expect after my Dermapen treatments?

Day 1: Erythema and redness, the severity of which will depend upon the aggressiveness of the performed treatment and the type of skin of the patient.
Day 2: Red or pink hue similar to moderate sunburn may persist and there may be some noticeable swelling on day 2.
Day 3: Skin returns to normal colour quickly but may still retain a pink hue. Swelling subsides.

How many treatments of Dermapen can I have per year?

On average a course of 4-8 treatments of Dermapen per year is advised as the results are long lasting.

How soon after filler injections can I have a Dermapen treatment?

It’s recommended to leave at least 4 days after filler injections so that any post treatment bruising from the fillers can settle. Or you can have your Dermapen treatment 1-2 days before having your filler injections if you prefer.

Should Botox users wait 6 weeks before having a Botox treatment?

Clients who have had Botox treatments should wait 2 weeks either side of having Dermapen treatment.

Is Dermapem safe?

Allergic reactions and side-effects are unlikely to occur as injections are not a part of Dermapen treatment. The procedure is minimally invasive, which means that the healing process is quick and so there is virtually no downtime. And the simple aftercare can be done at home.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with Dermapen or skin needling?

Side effects experienced with Dermapen will usually subside within 48 hours. They include erythema, stinging, itching and tightness of the skin.

Is it normal to have a few slightly raised red and itchy lesions?

Yes, absolutely normal. There is a range of symptoms from red and dry skin, flaky dry and red skin or lots of lumps like pimples but they disappear in 3 days. It’s just the body purging itself of toxins.

Can I have the Dermapen treatment in conjunction with IPL hair removal and/or rejuvenation settings and what should be the time gap?

Not IPL rejuvenation. You would get scar tissue from a double wound healing response. They could treat pigmentation, but this is not necessary when the Dermapen provides the versatility. Use at 4-week intervals if necessary.

What if I have had electrolysis? Is it still okay to have a Dermapen treatment?

A Dermapen treatment is fine after electrolysis but it is best to let the skin heal for a week or 2 as it will be more sensitive. However, the pain levels experienced during the treatment may be greater. This will depend on the electrolysis practitioner because some tend to cause more damage to the skin and therefore the skin requires more healing time.

Can I have the Dermapen treatment in conjunction with chemical skin peels?

Generally yes and it can be a good combination of treatments. You can alternate the treatments between Dermapen and then skin peel every 3 weeks.
